I think almost all of us have realised over the last few months how important our favourite local spots are to us.
Whether it’s a bar, cafe, sporting venue, hardware shop, boutique, or event – there’s a particular warmth and special sense of community that comes from supporting independently run business, and boy have we missed it.
This list is definitely not exhaustive – in fact, we could have gone on and on (how lucky are we). But in the interest of blog length, we’ve kept it to one pick each. Apart from Michael who honestly would rather not be in the blog than choose between his two venues.
We can’t wait to continue our support for each and every one of the below, and we 100% urge you to check them out.
AbiOkay, so if you’re lucky enough to see a free table outside under the awning, then GRAB IT, if not then takeaway is still as delicious! The Pantry is THE BEST PLACE for vegan cakes, the most incredible salad boxes (we’re not talking a bit of lettuce and tomato here - think harissa potato salad, fresh summer coleslaw, handmade veggie samosas!) and THE BEST OAT FLAT WHITES IN CARDIFF. There, I said it!
JamesHaving done a couple of team outings to Printhaus, I’m craving getting back in there with the team for an excuse to get our hands mucky, rock the squeegee and create some wild and wonderful prints. Printhaus is such an inspiring place to go for its laid back atmosphere, helpful and attentive staff and a place to really flex your creativity. We’re so pleased it’s now reopened and will be looking to book in as soon as the team is back together.
SamWell it's been a strange time with mountain biking. Yeah we can go ahead and explore with the bikes and find some fun bits and pieces around the place, but I have been busting for some groomed trails again. That’s why it’ll have to be Bike Park Wales! Unfortunately the uplift will be out of action so I will need to get my legs ready for spinning up the hill, but I don't think I’ll care when I finally do my first ride at the bike park since March. I've even got new shoes, cleats and a full-face ready for the occasion!
EmilyTwo words: pork cubano. To be honest, everything on the menu is guaranteed to be finger-licking, but I doubt I’ll ever stray from the cubano. Wright’s is the kind of place you could happily stay all day - it’s welcoming, laid back, delicious in taste and interior, has a deli only dreams are made of and a room full of handpicked wines. It’s just lush. If I’m heading ‘home home’ for the weekend, not many places could trump this special spot in my rural nook of Wales.
MichaelI was told to pick one venue, but choosing between Le Pub in Newport and The Moon in Cardiff would be like choosing a favourite child/pet/parent/whatever. I love live music, I especially love it in rough around the edges independent venues. There is nothing like being crammed back into a small room with a band playing so loud I can feel my internal organs shake. As much as I love food, that industry has managed to do some rethinking to keep ticking over. The live events industry has ground to a total halt and I can't wait for it to come back in ANY form.
ChelsieThis has to be one of my favourite places to visit in Cardiff. With the bar packed with different varieties of Gin and so many various accompaniments, it makes for a great night out or even a fancy lunch. Gin and Juice is full of quirks and whenever I go there I discover something new in the interior. I’m always excited to get back to discover more gin and vintage finds. It has an almost New York vibe about it, with laid back snugs with soulful music. All the drinks come in beautiful glasses with big chunks of fruit and edible flowers (very instagrammable!). I can’t wait to get back and enjoy a lush g&t!
JoeGreen Man Festival is epic. It would actually be today (20th of August) that we’d be packed up, ready to hop in the van and head over to Glanusk, pitch a tent, explore, enjoy the music, unwind and just generally slow down. Green Man is a place where we meet with friends and spend time as a family, and whether it’s raining or not, you just love it. Obviously we were gutted when we found out that it was cancelled this year. But hey, we understand, we’ve banked our tickets and can’t wait ‘til August 2021.
