What is Brand Labs?
Back in the summer of 2017, we launched a competition called Brand Labs in order to support one start-up based within Wales on their path to success with a beautifully designed and considered brand and website, to help them present their ideas to the world in the way they’d always dreamed of.
We didn’t do this for a pat on the back or for some God-complex reason, but because we’ve been there. Designdough was born from a small back bedroom in Grangetown with nothing but relentless work, late nights and a little faith to power it.
As designers, we were already equipped with the tools to brand ourselves in the way we wanted to from the beginning, but we know not everyone has the resources or funding available to arm them with an epic brand to take on the world with.
So once again, Brand Labs is back so that we can help out a business we believe in, and give something back to the Welsh economy that we grew from. Plus, we just love creating amazing brands. As in, we loooooooooove it!

A few provisos to have when applying:
- You’ll have to trust us as an agency to make the best decisions for your brand. This will be a collaborative process, so please don’t apply if you want everything done your way or the highway. In order to get the most out of your design, you need to have confidence in us.
- We want to see that you have a clear vision for your business, or at least a sense of what you like and don’t like in a brand.
- We repeat – collaboration. We don’t work for you and you don’t work for us – in order to get the best result possible, we need to work together. So get ready to lay all the information out on the table for us so we can help shape a visual identity that represents you wholeheartedly.
- It’s going to be fun, so we want to shout about it! We’ll want to share the progress and outcomes with our followers, which means you’ll need to be happy with being photographed or interviewed.
- In order to be our Brand Labs 2019 winner, we need to see, hear and feel the passion and ambition you have for your business ooze out of your application. Tell us why you get up in the morning or how many times you’ve wanted to throw the towel in only to realise you can’t see yourself doing anything else. Sell it to us.
- Once we’ve picked our favourite applications, we’ll invite those businesses to the studio to present to us why they should win. Don’t worry, it’s not some sort of Dragon’s Den set up, we just want to talk openly about your business. The presentation can take any form but it needs to communicate to us why you’ve got what it takes to go all the way and what a quality brand could do for you. Get us just as excited as you are.

To be in with a chance at this year’s Brand Labs, please complete our online application form. The application will close at 5pm on Friday 30th August 2019 . Our best advice? Just go for it!
